1989 gmc 1500 pick truck will not start?

To keep this simple here some info.I will assume the battery,alternator and starter work fine.Now next are you getting spark at your plugs,to check this pull one plug boot off and turn engine over to see if there is spark.You may have to slide the boot back some to expose the metal end(recommend)so you can verify.Is the carb or if fuel injected do smell fuel in the carb or intake?Now if there is no spark at the plug wire to the plug it could be a bad distributor cap,rotor button,or ignition module possibly the coil itself is bad.If fuel is not present could be dirty fuel filer,and if fuel injected bad injector.I can list more ideas but,the question is somewhat plain and could be any number of problems.For instance 89 b2200 turns over but will not start.That is easier to help clarify the issue.

Try removing the steering wheel surround that covers the ignition cylinder. It's been my experience with Nissan that this is almost always the culprit, so much so that if a Nissan is brought to me for repair, I check this regardless. You will see a brown board on the back side of the ignition cylinder that has multiple wires soldered to it. There is a fair amount of tension on those wires and at times, due to low lead solder (not very fliexible), the solder points will break off, especially the Blk/Wht wire.

Well where do we start? Does it crank over? If no check Batt do you hear a click if yes check batt and starter. Now if all that is working did it just go bad has it been acting up? I need alot more info to help but I will try

It turns over but doesn't engage. New battery, water pump, fuel pump with spider and tune up. I don't know if this helps but the speedometer which includes the cruise control is out too.

It could be a bad ignition module if the engine is turning but just doesn't start. My 88 GMC 2500 had this problem and it was an easy fix. Although I first replaced the spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor using a process of elimination. The ignition module is right under the cap and only needs a screwdriver or small socket (depending on the type of screw head) to remove once the two wired connectors are disconnected. Just remember to disconnect the battery first before removal. Also be sure the distributor cap is returned to its same correct position.
