First of all, this question does not have a simple answer. The prospective tattooist should contact the Dept. of Health in his state to inquire about required requlations. He could also start by contacting an already licensed tattooist in his area and ask if they could provide information. I own and operate a studio in Arkansas. A license here is obtained by the following: student must apprentice for a minimum of 6 months under a licensed artist who has had their license in AR for at least 3 years. An annual fee per artist of $150 must be paid to the AR Dept of Health. The apprenticeship fees vary according to who you obtain internship with. I've heard of "schooling fees" ranging from $4000 to $15,000. Read the contract! Many require an extended time obligation as well. Some shops commit you to an additional 18 months and some an additional 10 years. Testing with the Dpt of Hlth is also required for sign off add the end of your apprenticeship. All of this is prompted and requlated by your instructor and at his call. I hope I helped to shed some light. Requlations only inform you of the red tape affiliated with the industry. Pricing and costs are generally up to the individual tattoo instructors.

Check with zoning department and/or the business license department of the municipality that you intend to set up business in. Also, check with the Health Department to see if you need a health department license.

To get a peircing license, youd have to find someone who does them, and have them train you on their own time with their own supplys with a large payment, because they are loosing some money to train you in some ways. I would think id be about the same for tattoos. It takes a year of training and you can get your license at 16. Ask someone who is a tattoo artist now to get more specific, if you cant get there... call!

After an apprenticeship you have to take the board exams through the board of barbers and hairdressers. Don't ask me why they're in charge of tattoo's. I don't know either.
