How does life on earth depend on the sun?

Because without the Sun's warming and harming rays, our planet would not sustain enough heat for life. Sure, the earth has geothermal heat, but it still needs the sun. Even if we, humans, were able to survive without sun(which we are not, we a need Vitamin D from the sun) there would be no plants, since plants run on photosynthesis. If no plants are existent, then there would be no cattle, or animals that eat plant life. And the meat eating animals that we may eat would not eat their prey, the herbivore, so, there are your reasons.

In its natural state, solar energy is important to the earth because it warms the earth, makes plants grow, causes weather, causes water to evaporate and in turn rain, etc. The harnessing of solar energy as an alternate power source is important because it is less expensive and always available on clear days. Solar power will lesson our dependancy on other expendable resources. Solar power is a virtually pollutant free energy source.
