Artists make art for the sake of art and because they are compelled to, not because it's a career choice, because to be true to your art means often being untrue to your landlord, your stomach and other physical needs, and having lots of menial--but sometimes interesting--jobs that will become very tedious after a few decades as will crappy living arrangements and scrounging for materials and a workspace. But hey, you gotta do what you gotta do.
Completely subjective to; how good you are as an artist, how much clientele you regularly have per week, if the shop that you work for is salary, commission based, or you simply have a monthly rental fee for your booth. Could be anywhere from what you could make at McDonald's to easily $1,600.00 or more per week if you are good enough.

A Brooklyn Artist, Tattoo Artist and Piercer.
Tattoo artist, featured on a show called L.A. Ink. Overpriced tattoos.
The salary of a tattoo artist varies from area to area. An artist will charge anywhere between $80-$150 on average, with some charging up to $285 an hour. This seems like a lot, but the expenses for doing the art, getting your name out, shop cut, and so much more, we average about 50 an hour. This also has to play on weather, name and popularity of the shop, season, and so many things. It is really hard to determine how much a tattoo artist makes, but it's safe to bet that we as artists are not having to take on a second job if we are any good...
