The names and number of knights vary from retelling to retelling. In some there are as few as 9, in some as many as 500 knights.

The most well-known knights were King Arthur, Sir Lancelot, Sir Robin, Sir Gallahad/Galahad/Galahalt, Sir Percivalt/Percival/Percivale, Sir Gawain/Gawaine/Gwaine, Sir Bedivere/Bedievere, Sir Bors, Sir Ector/Hector, Sir Kay/Kai/Cai, Sir Gareth, Sir Gaheris, Sir Agravaine/Agravain and Sir Tristam.

However there are many more knights, whose stories vary between retellings, and many variant spellings.

The Black Knight was never a knight of the round table because he betrayed King Arthur.

Accounts vary widely form story to story.

The earliest list of "Arthur's men" is found in the medieval Welsh story Culhwch and Olwen.

Almost none of these names appear anywhere else but in a few later Welsh tales.

In the poem Erec et Enide by Chrétien de Troyes, which is the earliest surviving independent verse Arthurian tale, Chrétien provides a list of Knights of the Round Table.

Most of these names, but not all, are also found in later Arthurian romances.

Another list is found in some versions of the later medieval romance known as the Prose Tristan. These are supposedly the knights who entered the quest of the Holy Grail.

The author here includes some knights that are known elsewhere but otherwise not included as Knights of the Round Table.

A second and differing list of the Knights of the Round Table who entered the quest of the Holy Grail is found in the so-called Post-Vulgate Quest of the Holy Grail.

Some of these names are not found elsewhere.

Sir Thomas Malory in his Le Morte d'Arthur provides a list of most of the Knights of the Round Table just before the beginning of his account of the Death of Arthur. . This list also contains many knights who are known elsewhere but not as Knights of the Round Table.

The number of Knights of the Round Table varies in different romances. The most normal amount is 150. Spelling of the names differs from text to text and often even within the same text.
