How long was Maya Angelou a mute?

At the age of seven she was raped by her mother's then boyfriend. A few days later her attacker was found dead. She believed her words had killed the man. She didn't begin speaking until 5 and a half years later when she returned home from living with her grandmother in San Fransisco. The first person she spoke to was her brother whom she grew incredibly close to.
