Dante was influenced by Tuscan poetry, particularly of troubadours of his own time. He came to be influenced also by Occitan writers of his time and ancient Latin poetry, particularly of Virgil.

Of course, he was also profoundly influenced by the political and religious goings on of his own generation, and by his own romantic feelings.
