Tattoo "designers" get paid little to nothing (assuming you're talking about flash artists). Tattoo artists however, get paid anywhere from $20 per hour to $100 per hour depending on the shop, town, area, and your level of expertise.

A good artist starts @ $150/hour. On average, a small tattoo that is 1"x1" in size would cost about $60.

It depends on your experience in the tattooing business (how long you've been working as a tattooist), how many customers you get (are you popular in your city or not so much) and the venue at which you tattoo (is it dumpy, or classy? Successful or on the brink of bankruptcy?) It also depends on the actual tattoo you do. Smaller tattoos usually cost a minimum of $60 and larger, more detailed ones can retail from anywhere between $100 to $1000 for the really exclusive ones.

There couldn't be a more subjective question than this in regards to tattooing. When I first started out in the business, I worked pretty much for free for a good while, and this is the case with a good number of artists. You will most likely have to get a second job for the first year or so to help supplement the income, I did. You have to build a name and have quality work on people who can act as walking billboards for you, and get you even more clients. Above all, the level of your skill as an artist will control how much you can and will make.

There is the location of your shop which can play a MAJOR factor into how much you can hope to make. You definitely will want to follow the economic geography and choose to work in an area that has some actual money in the community where people can afford to get work done for decent prices without always trying to pull your pants down as an artist. This can really be the death nail for some shops because no matter how good they are, they just don't have the prime location to attract the general public, and I've seen a lot of shops fold up pretty quick due to this.

For the most part though you are either paid; salary, commission, or a monthly rental fee for your space and the costs and percentages of commission jump from place to place. Some shops will buy your supplies while some make you buy your own, some will charge you a monthly rental fee as well as a small cut of your take, while some shops that are in poorer locations are more fans of salary as opposed to commission due to lack of walk in traffic. This is good in some instances since it gives you a guaranteed paycheck at the end of the week, but usually shops like this have the salary frozen, rarely give raises or bonuses, and when the nice weather hits and your business is getting heavier, they still pay you the same salary and rape you out of the lion's share of your cash. I'd say that 80% of artists get paid commission though, and this is usually no more than a 60/40 take, with 40% going to the house. Shops that offer booth rental fees are the most ideal for artists to work in, as this is usually the instance that allows you to really make the fullest amount that you could hope for in this profession.
