I think you're referring to hypertrophic scarring. Its just a type of scar tissue. it doesn't happen every time you pierce cartilage, but it's pretty common with cartilage piercings. Its pretty easy to treat though.

The "bump" is actually a "hypertrophic reaction", inexperienced piercers and internet body piercing geniuses will call it a "keloid scar". This is completely incorrect. This bump is caused by several things all of which are irritants to the new piercing triggering the "reaction" by the formation of the "bump". Aftercare being the number one cause, generally due to a lack of proper cleaning technique and useless aftercare "product". Piercings need only three things to heal with little or no problem. 1) Good rest: Proper sleep is important, this is when the body does it's "fix and repair" so getting good quality rest is important. 2) Good diet: Proper eating is important, without a balanced reasonable diet your body doesn't get the vitamins and minerals it burns during the day and really uses at night when you are sleeping. Remember the "fix and repair" cycle during your sleep period, without specific minerals and vitamins the body can't repair damaged tissue as effectively prolonging the healing period for piercings. 3) Aftercare: Remember the story your piercer told you about using this and that for cleaning the piercing? Well it's partly true, the piercing needs to be rinsed daily with clean water and the jewellery needs to be moved to rinse the discharge out of the piercing. Yes you were told not to move the jewellery, well that's wrong. We need to get the fresh clean water into the piercing to rinse the discharge the body is forming out of the piercing to allow the new tissue to grow inside the piercing. What about sea salt soaks, aftercare solution, aftercare spray, eye of newt, essence of worm wart? Well I am going to catch flack for this but it's all a cash grab. Your body is quite capable of healing a piercing without all the woo woo magic crap. Just rinse the piercing daily in the shower while moving the jewellery to allow the fresh water into the piercing to do it's job and the piercing will heal just like magic. Now how do you rinse inner ear cartilage piercings with running water without almost drowning yourself? Well it's called an irrigation syringe available at most drug stores for a couple of bucks, this allows you to get the water into the spot with ease and drowning is never an issue. Flush the piercing daily in the shower before you exit, do this daily and the bump with disapear all on it's own. The above information is based on over 28,000 piercings professionally performed by me over 23 years as a professional body piercer and former first responder.

What is a small bump on the front of the left ear and is it dangerous?

My sister got her ear pierced and she had an allergic reaction to it, so she had to take the ring out. When it healed, it grew a small bump on the front side of her ear. The doctor said that it is not going to hurt her, just to leave it alone. Did you just have your ears pierced? If so, that might be it. Good luck:)

If I have a bump on the back of your cartilage piercing and take out the stud will the bump disappear?

When I went back to my piercing place where I got my cartilage pierced, they told me the lump was due to me sleeping on the pierced ear. They told me from now on try not to sleep on that ear as the lump is due to the pressure of your earring pushing up against the skin. To get rid of a cartilage piercing bump: 1) All you have to do is buy some aspirin and then use one tablet and crush it (into eg a bowl). 2) Then add a tiny bit of cold water. 3) Then mix it together and it should turn into a sort of paiste. 4) Then apply this onto the cartilage bump, using a cotton bud or something. (but try not to get it on any other part of your skin). 5) Keep doing this once a day everyday until the bump dissapears. Mine took me three days to go.

How much is it to get your cartilage pierced at Claires?

You should NOT get your cartilage pierced at any other place aside from a tattoo parlor. No piercings should be done without a hollow needle as a regular needle will push the skin and cartilage that is being pierced to the back of your ear causing infection, swelling, and an all out gross looking ear. I highly suggest that you go to a tattoo parlor and get it done professionally. It will cost anywhere from10-40 dollars depending on where you go and if you have an earring to go in it. The earring should be steel as it is hypoallergenic. Sources: I'm a piercer and I have a lot of experience and I have many piercings including my cartilage. Hope this helps. --------------------------------------------------- Improved answer: I dont understand why everyone says not to get it done at Claire's. I got my cartilage done at Claire's and it was PERFECTLY FINE. It was $33 for the earring, piercing, and ear cleaner fluid. My ear did NOT get infected and nothing bad happened at all. Personally tattoo parlors are pretty scary.... Everyone at Claire's are nice and friendly Sources: Got my cartilage pierced at Claire's

What does it mean to have your top right ear pierced?

You're having your cartilage pierced... Some boys in my grade are teasing me about getting only one ear pierced at the top and i just dont know what to do or say to them. Ive got my lobe pierced on both ears though. Please tell me what theyre laughing at? Those guys are jerks.. I know TONS of girls who only get one ear pierced at the top. Honestly, i think it looks stupid if you get two. thanks for your answer i sort of lost a bit of confidence but then i relised screw them.

Why is it so bad to get the top of your ear pierced with a gun?

Its not bad to get your ear pierced with a gun, all my mates have got it done and some adults i know have got it done and they have had it done since they wer young and they got it done with a gun and there is nothing wrong with it! In most countries the use of piercing guns for anything other than ear lobes is a direct violation of health regulations. Piercing guns are not designed nor intended to pierce the cartilage because due to the manner in which the piercing stud tears the skin and punctures the cartilage it doesn't allow room for the skin to heal around the punctured cartilage, leaving the cartilage available for infiltration by bacteria and infection.

What is the cause of a lump on your outer ear above the ear lobe on the cartilage area of the outer ear?

You may have an infection. I got my lobes pierced, and my left ear got infected, but now my right ar is infected, and not my left. My piercer told me to put "a topical ointment" on it if it gets infected (a topical ointment is something like Neosporin which works well for me). I also take Ibuprofen an hour or so before bed so I sleep easier, and it doesn't hurt as much. Go ahead and call a doctor or piercer. Even if you don't have your cartilage pierced, put Noesporin on it, take Ibuprofen, and calll a doctor.
