Acid rain is formed when air is polluted with chemicals such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and carbon dioxide. When the pollutants in the air are mixed with the water vapor in the clouds; the acid rain falls to Earth. Now the acid rain has the the burning feeling similar to vinegar.

Acid rain over a short period of time will not do much damage to humans or the natural environment, but over time the acid could harm the humus (topsoil) and damage the forests' nutrients and mineral supply in the ground. It can also lead to water poisoning. Which can affect both plants and animals.

The main polluters are industries especially coal fired power stations as these pump out sulfur dioxide as a waste product.
