The skeletal system has many important functions, including: 1. Providing a sturdy attachment site for your muscles, so that your body can move, and so that the body does not exist in a "gelatinous" state. 2. The skeletal system can be divided into two "parts"; the Axial skeleton and the Appendicular skeleton. The axial skeleton basicallly consists of the bones of your skull and trunk (spine, ribs,). The appendicular skeleton is made up of the bones of your arms and legs. The axial skeleton gives your body it's posture, so that it doesn't fall over. It also protects vital organs- the ribs enclose/protect the lungs, and the sterum covers/protects the heart. The liver is also partially protected by your ribs. The bones of your skull protect your brain, etc. The bones of the appendicular skeleton (working w/our muscles) allow us to walk, stand, grasp, and move objects. 3. Many bones store important minerals like calcium and phosphorus, etc. 4. Some bones produce and store bone marrow (red and yellow bone marrow). Red bone marrow produces blood cells.
