2N Refers to a diploid cell or organism, in which two copies of each gene are present. Cells before and after mitosis are 2N, or diploid. Cells before meiosis are 2n, and following meiosis are 1n, or haploid.

2n represents the total number of chromatids (1/2 of a chromosome) in a karyotype (or a picture of an organisms chromosomes). For example, the human body has 23 pairs of chromosomes, so n would be 23, so 2n (the number of 1/2 chromosomes) is 46, or 23 x 2)

N is the literal symbol for a daughter cell which is haploid. 2N refers to the daughter cell which is a diploid. Haploid cells are products of meiosis, while diploids are products of mitosis.
