I was told by my doctor that this is usually an indication that the urine sample has been contaminated. Squamous epi's are present on the skin and a large amount observed in a urine sample means that the specimen may not have been collected properly. Clean catch samples are preferable for urine samples because they're less likely to have contamination. A good clean catch first requires cleaning the area around the bladder first with special wipes given. Then upon urination you'll be instructed to let the first bit of urine that comes out go into the toilet and then collect only the midstream urine. It's supposed to be the freshest and least contaminated from outside body sources. I recently had a urinalysis done and the levels of squamous epi's was relatively high so my physician threw it out, said the results were useless, and stated a new test was necessary. I'm not a doctor so I can't say that this is relevant to your situation, but I've read elsewhere too that when a lab technician notices high levels of this epithelial cells, contamination is often suspected.
