When the cell has enough energy and it is electrically and chemically signaled to permit the action, it begins cell division. The division of the nucleus is called mitosis. The sequence of events is divided into phases: prophase, prometaphase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase. Some forms of medication that attack bacteria have been found to also kill off some of the mitochondria of some cells, reducing the cell's ability to produce energy or to perform cell division. Some people believe that sensitivity to these drugs can produce unusual amounts of cell damage, especially to cells that do not readily multiply such as those found in the brain, leading to various neurological diseases. This was one of the working theories behind the cause of Alzheimer's disease, a brain disease where mental impairment progresses until death of the patient, and currently has no allopathic medical (drug-related) cure--only medications to treat aspects of the symptoms.
