Haemoglobin is the iron-containing oxygen-transport metalloprotein in the red blood cells of vertebrates, and the tissues of some invertebrates.

In mammals, the protein makes up about 97% of the red blood cell's dry content, and around 35% of the total content (including water). Haemoglobin transports oxygen from the lungs or gills to the rest of the body where it releases the oxygen for cell use. It also has a variety of other roles of gas transport and effect-modulation which vary from species to species, and are quite diverse in some invertebrates.

Hemoglobulin, or hemoglobin, is the protein that transports oxygen from lungs to tissues. It is highly enriched in red blood cells and is responsible for the red colour of blood. It consists of two alpha and two beta subunits in adults. In fetal blood the beta subunits are substituted with two gamma subunits, which has a higher affinity for oxygen to extract it from the mother's blood. Hemoglobulin proteins don't actually bind oxygen directly. This is done by the prosthetic group called heme. Heme is a complex organic molecule that coordinates an iron ion, which in turn secures oxygen. This is why people with low iron levels can be anemic - they can't carry as much oxygen. Hemoglobulin also transports carbon dioxide by a different mechanism. The affinity for carbon dioxide is inversely proportional to oxygen. Finally, carbon monoxide kills because it competes with oxygen for binding to hemoglobulin and the heme group.
