Most cases of tonsillitis are caused by a viral infection.

Viruses known to cause tonsillitis include:

  • rhinoviruses - which are viruses that cause thecommon cold
  • the influenza virus
  • parainfluenza virus - which causes laryngitis andcroup
  • enteroviruses - which cause hand, foot and mouth disease
  • adenovirus - which is a common cause of diarrhoea
  • the rubeola virus - which causes measles

In rare cases, tonsillitis can also be caused by the Epstein-Barr virus, which causes glandular fever.

If this is the case, you'll probably feel very ill. You'll have a sore throat and the lymph glands in your throat may be swollen. You may also have a fever and feel very tired.

The tonsils act as guardians to the gateway of the throat, respiratory tract and digestive tract. If they become infected by a virus or bacteria, they become enlarged and inflamed. They are making many white cells in defense. They can be streaked with pus. There will be a very sore throat, fever and chills. Strept bacteria are often associated with this disease.

Occasionally in some people a low-grade sore throat will accompany the presence of tonsillolith.Cryptic tonsillitis will come and go, although the removal of the tonsillolith will improve the condition.Medications work only for a short period of time. The sole longterm cure for cryptic tonsillitis is a tonsillectomy.
