There are more then 60 tree varieties that are native to Kentucky including: * American beech, holly, Hobhombem, Hombean and linden. * Black locust, Black cherry, Black oak, Black walnut and Blackgum. * Eastern hemlock, Eastern redbud and Eastern white oak. * Green hawthorn and Green ash. * Kentucky coffeetree which almost remained the official tree of Kentucky having held that position of honor from 16 February 1976 until the tulip poplar again won the struggle for recognition in 1994. * Mountain silverbell and Mountai stewartia. * Pawpaw. * Persimmon. * Red buckeye and Red maple. * Sassafras. * Scarlet oak * Sugar maple. * Tulip poplar which is the official state tree and has been since 1994 and is not a poplar at all but is a member of the magnolia family. It was once designated the official state tree (1974) but due to a clerical oversight that legislation was never recorded as having been passed. * Umbrella magnolia. * White Ash and White oak. * Yellow buckeye and Yellowwood.
