Bummer. you may have an ingrown toe nail. that really is a bummer. sorry dude. If it is red, swollen and painful at the side of your toenail it is most likely an ingrown toenail. this is an infection caused by the nail growing into the skin. it can be prevented by cutting your toenails straight across. the best thing to do, though it is very painful, is to dig out the ingrown nail using a tooth pick, or something like that, and then stuffing some cotton wool under that bit of the nail so that the infection can heal; some antibiotic cream will also help. you may want to ice your toe beforehand to reduce the pain and swelling. The other possibility is that you have stubbed it, there may be brusing around the base of your toe. there is not much you can do, other than put some ice on it for a while to reduce the pain.
maybe its a start of a in grown toenail...Just a guess lol make sure when you cut your nails, you cut them square along the top and even. dont cut them down the side or in an oval shape as this makes the nail grow out towards the sides resulting in a ingrown toe nail. the process of removing ingrowns is generally a pain and involves some resting periods from walking as they remove a lot of the nail and deaden a nerve stopping the regrowth in the area. avoid this if you can.
You probably have an acute attack of gout.

IF it is appropriate, the doctor might tape the toe to the next toe. Ice, rest, and an over-the-counter pain reliever for swelling and pain. They do not put a toe into a cast.
no it is called a second metatarsal
That is perfectly normal. There is a widespread mutation causing the second toe to extend farther than the big toe, but in the original structure of the human foot, the big toe extends the farthest.
There is a myth that people who are "smarter" have a longer second toe than the first or big toe. But in actuality having a longer second toe is genetic and happens just as much in men as it does in women. Also if it is longer then apparently u will be the leader in a relationship
When your second toe is bigger than your big toe. Also known as Greek Foot, people with this characteristic also usually have fairly large gaps between these two toes.

Pain in the toe is perceived by nerves that run from the toe to the brain. The brain then tells the person he is in pain. It is important for the body to sense pain or else he would not know that something is wrong.

Big toe pain is an inconvenience that not only slows us down, but causes us to lose sleep. Bunions are usually what the case is for non-athletic people to have big toe pain. On the other hand, athletes get big toe pain from trauma experienced during a workout.

On the Patrician foot the second toe is longer than the big toe.
That is perfectly normal. There is a widespread mutation causing the second toe to extend farther than the big toe, but in the original structure of the human foot, the big toe extends the farthest, and this also gives the best stability to the foot.
