Difference between acid and alkalis

An acid yields hydrogen ions (H+) when dissolved in water and has a pH of less than 7. An alkali, also called a base, yields hydroxide ion (OH-) and has a pH greater than 7.

Gramatically alkaline is an adjective and alkali is a noun, e.g. alkaline batteries.

In chemistry they are different elements. The alkali metals are a common family of elements, i.e. group 1 of the Periodic Table, and consist of metals like lithium, sodium and potsium. The alkaline earth metals are a different family of elements, ie. group 2 of the periodic table, and consist of earth metals like magnesium and calcium. In solution they are both basic, i.e. yielding a pH greater than 7, but the alkali metals are far more reactive than the earth metals.
