Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev,

He is credited with producing the first version of what is now the modern Periodic Table in the 1800's. He arranged the elements by their atomic weights and left gaps in the table, as he predicted the existence of undiscovered elements. His table was initially dismissed by his peers, until he was proven right when one of the elements he predicted, gallium (Ga), was discovered in 1875.

The element mendelevium (symbol Md, atomic number 101) is named for Dmitri Mendeleev (1834-1907) who created the original version of the modern Periodic Table of Elements. By defining the periods and atomic masses of known elements, it allowed scientists to predict the masses and characteristics of theretofore undiscovered elements.
