is what a metal or nonmetal???
Metals, on the left hand side of the Periodic Table, have few electrons in the outer shell. This lends itself to what is called metallic bonding in which many atoms of the elements share their outer electrons in a delocalised cloud which makes a hard structure which conducts electricity. Non-metals have outer electron shells which are nearly full. This means that small numbers of atoms bond covalently to form small molecules which usually are gases.
An element can be classified as a metal, nonmetal or metalloid. The "staircase" on the periodic table differentiates between these. Firstly, a metal is on the left side of the staircase. The metalloids line on either side of the staircase and contain both metal and nonmetal properties. Non- metals are on the right side of the staircase.
Which element?
Most elements are metals, but some are nonmetals and semimetals.
Most elements ARE metals, but here's two:
Fe (Iron), Au(Gold),
It depends on what elements it is.
Silicon and other semi-conductors

Examples of non-metal elements that are gases include hydrogen, oxygen, and many others, while bromine is the only liquid non-metal element.
calcium is a metalloid as it stands between metal and non metal as it doesn't have all the porperties of metal. calcium oxide is not an element so neither metal or non metal it is a compound
Antimony and arsenicÊbelong to the category of metalloid. A metalloid is an element whose properties are between that of a metal and a non-metal solid.
The element Mercury is considered to be non polar. It is not a compound but a molten metal. Mercury atoms are bonded to each other with metallic bonds.
Carbon is an element. It is a non metal
