The 3 characteristics of a nonmetal's is that they don't conduct heat very well, they are very hard and brittle, can be solids liquids and gasses at room temp where as metals are always solid apart from Mercury and they don't conduct electricity, there is 1 exception which is carbon which does conduct electricity but is a metal.
