A chemical symbol is the short version of the chemical name given to an element. The chemical symbol appears on the Periodic Table, is 1 or 2 characters long and is derived from the Latin name of the particular element.

As an example, Gold's chemical symbol is Au, which stands for the Latin word "Aurum".

A chemical formula is an abbreviated description of a compound, with a compound being a chemical made from more than one single element. The formula uses the chemical symbols, in a precise pattern that follows the make-up of the compound, to accurately describe the chemical's elemental and electrical structure.

An example of a compound, or chemical formula, is H2O. 2 parts Hydrogen to 1 part Oxygen. The H is the element (or symbol), as is the O, whereas the H20 is the formula (or compound).

The chemical formula of a substance shows the composition of a substance using symbols, subscripts and other symbols along a single line. An elemental formula is also called a simple formula and is the chemical formula with all subscripts reduced to their LCD.

Equations use numbers to represent any quantity that the user wishes them ro represent, but chemical equations are a special type of equation used to represent chemical reactions.

Example:

2H2 + O2 = 2H2O

In this chemical equation the number of atoms of each element on each side must be equal. In this case 4 hydrogen atoms and 2 oxygen atoms make 2 molecules of water.

(the equation would look better if wiki answers would repair the format so that subscripts start working again . . . )

What is the difference between composition and mixture?

"A chemical compound is a pure material made out of a combination of two or more chemical elements that have been bonded through chemical procedures." " a chemical mixture is considered to be impure substance. What make it different from a compound is that a compound or pure substance contains constant composition; furthermore, chemical mixtures can be both created and separated physically and simply do not require chemical processes."
