Frosting appears to occur via two different phase transition mechanisms. The first is a sequence wherein water vapor first condenses to liquid water, whereupon the liquid water freezes to form frost. The second mechanism of frosting is direct vapor-solid deposition of frost (or desublimation) from water vapor. On a very cold day, desublimation is a likely frosting mechanism. Direct deposition of solids from vapor has applications in industry and the laboratory. We can vaporize a material, such as elemental gold, and then deposit the vapor onto a substrate. This process is known as sputtering.
