Both are 1 and 0. Both have numerical corrections. They both sound equal quality.

Coaxial is stronger, but there is a length at which it will stop working (lets say hundred of meters)

Optical is easier to break, but it can goes over km before signal becomes impossible to detect.

One way or another, buy the cheapest one, or the one for which there will be more available slot on your A/V receiver.

optical have higher bandwidth while co-axial have less bandwidth.

co-ax have less information carrying capacity than that of fiber optics.

Fiber-Optic (CAT5 or ethernet) cables are slightly thicker than a phone line. Coaxial cables are a single pin screw in connection. fiber optics can handle far more data, and a lot faster that a coaxial connection.

Because the twists form loops in alternating orientation, the conducted currents eliminate each other, and the resulting impairment on the signal carried is theoretically zero (even number of loops affected) of tiny (an odd number N of twists affected, where N-1 twists cancel each other out).
