Colossus worked by holes punched in a paper tape. It was programmed by switches and plugs. Colossus used thermionic valves (vacuum tubes) to perform Boolean and counting operations.

It was a fixed program, single purpose computer. It was designed to break the German code during WW2. It had no internally stored programs. To set a new task the operator had to set up plugs and switches to alter the wiring. You cannot compare Colossus to modern computers.
