How many pictures can 2gb hold?

A rough and tumble answer is that a 2GB SD card can hold about 400 pictures if it is completely empty to start with. There are however, many variables such as pixel size, file format, and compression size that would complicate the answer.

Now, according to this crucial.com memory card guide, the average filesize of an 8 megapixel photo is 4.2MB, and at that estimate a 2GB memory card will hold 464 photos.

But I figure that Crucial errs on the conservative side by using a larger than average size for their calculations. People would complain if they advertised the card as being able to hold 500 photos, but it only held 480.

But I won't be surprised if you fit 500, or even 600 or more photos on your 2GB card.

It largely depends on the type of photos you take, and it might be a good idea to figure out the average size of the photos you take. When you finish a shoot, check the total amount of space used on the card and divide it by the number of photos. If you're taking photos of very intricate subjects your average filesize might easily get up closer to 4MB.

If you're shooting in RAW format, the average filesize will be about 7MB, in which case you'll be able to fit about 280-300 photos on the card.

it depends on what size the photos are. If you have a maybe 5 gb or 8gb camera you wont fit a lot on a 2Gb memory card. It varies from about 40 to several thousand, depending on file type, resolution and compression. Top end JPEGS on a 6 MB camera would fit about 600 on a 2 GB card. Cameras are rated in megapixels, not gb as above; certainly most cameras these days are in the range of 5 megapixels to 12 megapixels.
