Exploratory Testing as the name suggests is all about exploring the application. It is performed in order to find out the defects or application's breaking point. Here, tester uses his/her domain knowledge and testing experience to predict where and under what conditions the system might behave unexpectedly. Many QA testing companies offer this type of testing for validating applications which have less testing time period.

Exploratory testing seeks to find out how the software actually works, and to ask questions about how it will handle difficult and easy cases. Exploratory testing has always been performed by skilled testers. The main advantage of exploratory testing is that less preparation is needed, important bugs are found quickly, and at execution time, the approach tends to be more intellectually stimulating than execution of scripted tests.

It basically involves test design and test execution simultaneously against the application. Tester focuses on application's limits using boundary value analysis and equivalence partitioning techniques. It is a type of testing in which there is no planning done in advance, and is completely hands-on, where tester thinks on their feet, and try to push the program to its limits. Each test is often carried on the basis of previous test's result, however the testing is still completely in the tester's control. The tester decides how to test. For example,

  • Scenario based: Scenario testing is done to make sure that the end to end functioning of software is working fine, or all the business process flows of the software are working fine.
  • Result based: In this technique, tester verifies the end results to ensure that software is functioning properly.

When is to be performed:

When there is no testing document provided or there are minimal documents to conduct the testing. It is performed as a part of final check before the application is released. It is very beneficial, takes less time to conduct, hence it is useful, fast and accurate as well. This testing can also be done in the early stages of the systems development life cycle (SDLC) in order to confirm desired functionality of developed product.

Hope this information is clear to you and get back to us in case need more information.

What are the principles of exploratory testing?

Hii! I have done exploratory testing for my project with the help of TestEvolve, a fast and effective automated testing tool. I can Explain about the Principles of Exploratory Testing. Exploratory testing is a dynamic approach that emphasizes the tester's creativity and intuition. It involves learning about the application while simultaneously designing and executing tests, allowing for immediate feedback and adaptation. This method focuses on user experience, prioritizing usability and ensuring the software meets user expectations. Testers can adjust their strategies based on real-time observations, uncovering hidden defects. If you’re looking for a tool to enhance your exploratory testing, I highly recommend TestEvolve. It allows you to seamlessly track your exploratory efforts alongside automated test runs, giving you a complete view of your project’s quality.

What is the difference between exploratory testing and ad hoc testing?

Ad hoc testing is a commonly used term for software testing performed without planning and documentation..The tests are intended to be run only once, unless a defect is discovered. Ad hoc testing is the least formal test method. The strength of ad hoc testing is that important defects can be found quickly. The plainest definition of exploratory testing is test design and test execution at the same time. Exploratory tests are not defined in advance and carried out precisely according to plan.

What are some examples of exploratory testing techniques?

Hi! I have done exploratory testing for my project with the help of TestEvolve, a fast and effective automated testing tool. This experience allowed me to explain some example of exploratory testing techniques. Here are some examples of exploratory testing techniques: Session-Based Testing - Testers work in time-boxed sessions, focusing on specific areas of the application. This structure helps manage exploration while allowing for flexibility. Freestyle Testing - Testers explore the application without predefined test cases, relying on their intuition and experience to identify potential issues. Use Case Testing - Testers simulate real-world scenarios based on user stories or use cases, ensuring that the application meets user expectations in practical situations. Heuristic Evaluation - Testers use established heuristics or guidelines to identify areas of concern, helping to focus their exploratory efforts on high-risk aspects of the application.

What are the best practices of exploratory testing?

Hi! In my project, I utilized TestEvolve, an efficient automated testing tool, to conduct exploratory testing. This experience enabled me to implement best practices effectively, resulting in a more robust and high-quality application. So, I can Explain about the best practices of Exploratory Testing. Define Clear Objectives - Set specific goals for each testing session to maintain focus and improve the effectiveness of your exploration. Time-Box Sessions - Limit each testing session to a fixed duration, ensuring concentrated efforts and better management of exploration. Use Heuristics - Utilize guidelines to direct your exploration, helping to identify high-risk areas and potential issues more efficiently. Document Findings - Record detailed notes on observations and defects during testing to facilitate knowledge sharing and future reference. Collaborate with Team Members - Work with developers and testers to share insights and discuss findings, enhancing the overall testing process.
