A web developer's tools of the trade, like any software engineer, can be broken into two major categories: programming tools and development environment. Developing new applications on a computer without an IDE (integrated development environment) is close to impossible, so this is always the first step in developing web-based software. The most commonly used programming languages are JavaScript, PHP, Ruby, Python, and Java.

Added to answer: I disagree with #1, that you "need" Dreamweaver and Flash. You certainly need Photoshop (or something comparable and really, there isn't a good alternative) but you don't need Dreamweaver and you don't need Flash unless you intend to design Flash sites.

I use Photoshop to "sketch" a design from various elements, then slice up the graphics and hand code in Smultron, a free text editor for the Mac. Which brings us to hardware - get a Mac if you're going to be doing graphic design. I have a beautiful iMac that I find inspiring every time I turn it on! Seriously though, you can design on any machine that will let you use Photoshop. (but Mac rocks)

Check out website templates and they may save you a lot of time and headache.

Frontpage isn't really used anymore for web design and Photoshop is minimally used for doing specific tasks while building a website. Visual Studio (Microsoft) and Dreamweaver (Adobe) are probably the most used.

There are many answers to this question, although you would expect that there be a server and development applications involved.

For instance, a web developer can use a LAMP server, which is a general purpose web server that has Linux, Apache, MySQL and php/perl/python.

Web Hosting technologies are used for allowing websites to be publicly accessible to internet users.

Web developers would usually use an adobe suite of applications containing programs such as dreamweaver or any other prefered alternative applications for digital imaging and manipulation of web content.
