On a standard QWERTY keyboard, the proper position is along the "home row", with your left pinky over the letter A and your left pointer finger over F, and your right pointer finger over J and right pinky over ; (semicolon). Both thumbs should rest over the spacebar. Note the small raised area on the lower part of the F and J keys, to help your fingers find their way back "home." :)
