the north bridge deals with video and memory

and the south bridge deals with harddrive and display

but in short the chipset determins the memory and type of connections..

The motherboards chipset provides the CPU on the motherboard with additional circuitry and logic to allow it to connect to the peripherals on the motherboard, like SLI video cards, the PCI or PCI-e connectors and to the system DRAM. There are several makers of chipsets and each one is specific to a particular CPU (mostly Intel or AMD with several othes running far behind). The chipset (set because there are usually 2 chips), sometimes referred to the FSB controller and the Northbridge, are also referred to as "glue logic" because they "glue" all the various peripherals to the CPU and allow it to operate. Typical chipsets have an HD controller, the power supply controller, address decoders for all the peripherals and a DRAM controller. DRAM needing constant attention and control lest it lose its data which is a time consuming repetative task you don't really want to burden the CPU with handling.
