Operating systems have many roles, but one it to allow you to run applications on it. A GUI is a Graphical User Interface. People who use Windows or an Apple Mac are familiar. You can see menus, windows, icons etc. You can click on them to get things to happen. The version of an application you use must be compatible with the operating system you are using. So for example, a Mac version of Excel, with not work on a Windows computer, even though the fundamentals of the application are the same. The operating system will determine how it looks to a certain extent. To create an application to work on a GUI, you need to design the look and layout to be compatible with the operating system in use. This makes it easier for users to use. As any software designed for a GUI look similar, it is easier to learn different applications, as the same commands will work for things like opening and saving files and a huge range of other things. Where possible, the same options are on the same menus or ribbons and the same shortcut keys work in different applications.

The Operating System frees user applications from the nuances of the underlying hardware. For example, without a driver provided by the OS, each program that wanted to use the internet would have to implement TCP/IP in a library, and have to have a set of instructions for interfacing with all known network cards, including how to initialize them, configure their buffers, poll for new packets, and when and how to send packets. Furthermore, multiple applications running at once would have to find a way to cooperate and share the network card.
