In Milan, people blocked off houses, isolating those who were in them along with the sick. In Venice, people blocked off ports and isolated incoming ships. Pope Clement VI in Avignon sat between two fires to breathe pure air because the bacteria yersina pestis was destroyed by heat.

The plague was carried by rats, who were infested by fleas. As the rats succumbed to the plague, the starving fleas fed on humans infecting them with the plague.
