Vitamin D is synthesized at the skin. It is synthesised by the reaction between the sun's rays and estrogen (Actually look up to be sure, it could be a different steroid very similar to estrogen)

Skin is the organ absorbing Vitamin D. The source of vitamin D is sun light. Exposing to the sun light for 10 to 15 min will gain enough vitamin for the day. Vitamin D is very essential for bone strength. Otherwise to gain the same vitamin from other source means to eat 1 tray egg/day.

The skin's functions are for protection, water resistant barrier, Vitamin D synthesis, sensation, thermoregulation and social functions (i.e., facial expressions.) The hypodermis does NONE of these.
