Elpenor: Odyssyeus listens to Elpenor's story and promises him a proper burial. Anticlea: Odysseus is somewhat shocked because he was unaware of her death in his absence. The blood of the two sheep attracts the ghosts of the dead, and allows them to recognize the living after drinking from it. Tiresias amazingly is able to discern Odysseus' identity before drinking of the blood, but still desires to drink from it from some unnatural craving.
Odysseus does not venture into Hades, he merely speaks to the ghosts of the dead by a ritual.
