To be able to sustain life, planets must be big enough to be able to sustain a magnetic field, which protects against particles carried by solar wind and cosmic radiation. A large mass also helps a planet keep its atmosphere. A lack of an atmosphere removes the protective "blanket" from the planet. When space rock comes near the planet, instead of being burned up by the atmosphere, it can reach the surface and cause damage. Also, a planet without an atmosphere will not have breathable gasses, such as oxygen, and will not be able to sustain life.
