Magnesium Oxide increases in mass because it is made of oxygen AND magnesium, and the symbol equation explains that 2MG (2 magnesium) + O2( 2 oxygen) makes 2MGO (2 Magnesium Oxide) because oxygen is a molecule as the 2 shows that for oxygen it is made up of 2 atoms, and to balance the equation magnesium must be 2 too, making 2 Magnesium Oxide ,this shows the mass increases as oxygen is ADDED to magnesium, thus making it heavier and an increase in mass. Ta-Da just amazing chemistry logic!! :)
Nitrous Oxide is heavier than air.
It is a compound.
Magnesium oxide is formed when magnesium metal reacts with oxygen. It is an oxide of magnesium. Magnesium is the metal, and magnesium oxide is the resulting compound formed when magnesium reacts with oxygen.
When a magnesium strip is heated strongly in air, it undergoes a chemical reaction called oxidation. Magnesium reacts with oxygen in the air to form magnesium oxide. The mass of the strip increases because magnesium combines with oxygen atoms from the air to form a heavier compound (magnesium oxide).
Magnesium reacts with steam faster than cold water because magnesium needs to burn to get magnesium oxide and to get magnesium oxide there has to be heat and since steam is already heated it doesn't need much time, but the cold water needs time to heat first to react.
no
Nitrous Oxide is heavier than air.
When Magnesium burns, it is actually combining with oxygen in the air to form a new compound, magnesium oxide. If we were to carefully weigh a piece of magnesium before and after burning it, you would see that its weight increased by about one third. For example, if you start with 100 grams of magnesium, after the burn you would end up with about 130 grams of magnesium oxide. The fact that the magnesium oxide you create by burning is powdery, means that it takes up more space (size or volume) than the solid magnesium did.
Magnesium Oxide
You get a grey powder because magnesium is higher up in the reactivity series than Copper - (magnesium is more reactive than copper) therefore when you heat it up there is a displacement reaction. That grey powder is actully magnesium oxide and copper e.g Copper oxide + magnesium = magnesium oxide and copper.
It is a compound.
Magnesium oxide is formed when magnesium metal reacts with oxygen. It is an oxide of magnesium. Magnesium is the metal, and magnesium oxide is the resulting compound formed when magnesium reacts with oxygen.
magnesium oxide
Zinc oxide reacts with metallic magnesium to produce magnesium oxide and metallic zinc.
Magnesium + copper oxide --> magnesium oxide + copper
The difference is magnesium oxide contains oxide ions ,whereas aluminium oxide doesn't.
Magnesium reacts with steam faster than cold water because magnesium needs to burn to get magnesium oxide and to get magnesium oxide there has to be heat and since steam is already heated it doesn't need much time, but the cold water needs time to heat first to react.
