When you break up a rock, you have rock particles and the tiny spaces between the rock particles. Plants are most interested in those tiny spaces between the particles, called soil pores. Roots can move through these pores, and they cannot move through solid rock, unless there is a pre-existing crack in the rock. Also, roots need water and air, both of which can be found in the soil pores, and not a solid rock.
