a thermometer

Actually a calorimeter is the device used to measure heat, but a thermometer is one part of it. Thermal energy (the energy associated with atoms and molecules) IS measured by using a thermometer. However, the word heat indicates that the person is focused on the net amount of that thermal energy that is either gained or lost when 2 substances of differing amounts of thermal energy come into contact with each other. In this case, we are only interested in the amount transferred from the higher one to the lower one, as nature tries to reach equilibrium. Of course, this equipment only gives us the change in temperature after this exchange of energy. We still have to use the heat formula because mass and density differences between the 2 substances are also factors.

Hope this helps clarify.

What do we call an instrument which measures heat and cold?

An instrument that measures heat and cold is called a thermometer.

What measures heat and cold?

A thermometer measures heat or cold by detecting the temperature of an object or the surrounding environment. Heat causes the molecules to move faster, increasing the temperature, while cold slows down molecular movement, lowering the temperature.

What instrument that measures how much heat energy is stored in a substance is called a?

A calorimeter is an instrument that measures the amount of heat energy stored in a substance by determining the temperature change during a chemical reaction or physical process.

What is the relationship between specific heat and thermal conductivity in materials?

The relationship between specific heat and thermal conductivity in materials is that specific heat measures the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of a material, while thermal conductivity measures how well a material can transfer heat. Materials with high specific heat can absorb more heat without a large temperature change, while materials with high thermal conductivity can transfer heat quickly.

What is the relationship between thermal conductivity and specific heat in materials?

Thermal conductivity and specific heat are related but different properties of materials. Thermal conductivity measures how well a material can transfer heat, while specific heat measures how much heat a material can store. In general, materials with high thermal conductivity tend to have lower specific heat, and vice versa. This means that materials that are good at transferring heat quickly may not be as good at storing heat, and vice versa.

What are the differences between simple calorimeter and bomb calorimeter?

A simple calorimeter measures heat changes in a substance through temperature changes in water surrounding it, while a bomb calorimeter measures the heat of combustion of a substance by igniting it in a sealed chamber under high pressure. Bomb calorimeters are more precise and accurate than simple calorimeters, but they are also more complex and expensive to operate.
