When a particular job is divided in to large number of small tasks to allow specialization to take place. So that each person only performs a specific task(that they are good at) involved in the whole production process.

Example of Specialization:

(To become an expert in what you are doing) like

painting or

putting in tyres

Testing

Example of Division of labour:

A particular job (i.e. Painting a bicycle) can be divided into small tasks (i.e. You can paint the bicycle, your friend can select the colour and your other friend can hold the bicycle) to allow specialization (The reason you are going to paint is because you are good at it or an expert and your friend can select cause he/ she is good with colours and your other friend can hold the bicycle cause he is good at it (guess you can say that).

These terms come from the field of economics, and is often credited to Adam Smith, in his book "The Wealth of Nations." When producing any product, the process of making it can be broken down into a number of specific tasks; this is often called the "division of labor." And in many companies, each of these tasks is assigned to specific workers, who become proficient at doing the particular task; this is called "specialization." So, on an automobile assembly line, many people will take part in making the car, and some workers will be specialists in only bumpers or only fenders or only welding certain parts.

Another example could be in a school project to beautify the classroom before parents' visiting day: many students could collaborate, and each could perform a task like cleaning the floor or straightening out the desks or filing all the papers that are lying around; others who have an artistic skill might be the specialists in creating the decorations-- they could paint pictures for the bulletin board or create designs to put up throughout the room. There are other examples you could easily think of, involving making something and having a number of people work together on their individual part in the process of delivering the final result.
