In general if something "keeps" in means that it will not go bad with time, like certain types of food "keep well". Honey can "keep" for millenia in a sealed jar, for example.

When you say a person will keep, it means that they won't be going anywhere, and that there is an unlimited timespan on the joke or the issue. Shelve that issue and we can deal with it at a more appropriate time.

I think the usage is the same but it's a literal versus a metaphorical meaning.
