Design the pivot correctly. And make sure the cord to the fan motor is long enough.

If you mean to continue to turn, then you need 1) either a second motor or a power takeoff on the fan motor to keep it going,

and 2) a method to allow the power to flow ... slip rings are one good way.

Fans are either fitted with standard motors with field and armature windings, or shaded-pole motors. Shaded pole motors are almost impossible to burn-out but have little torque and they have only field windings. For an explanation of how shaded-pole motors work, see the link.

An exhaust fan will rotate in either direction depending on which way you want the airflow to go.

It is a fitting with the motor screwed on at the top, and the base is wide enough to stop it falling over.
