The dictionary definition of technology, according to the American Heritage Science Dictionary, is the use of scientific knowledge to solve practical problems, especially in industry and commerce.

To put it simply, it means that anything that uses information from the field of science and math to solve problems (equations, real-life, programming, etc.) is technology.

Naturally, the definition varies from person to person (think of a computer geek and a calculus professor), but generally the definition above applies.

Actually, the above is a better definition of engineering. As a definition, it does not adequately cover older and simpler technologies. There can be no doubt that the invention of the wheel was a technological leap forward, but it is uncertain how much science or math went into it. Looking at the etymology of the word, it comes from "teknos", a craft, and "logos", knowledge. What the word means is a method of getting something done.
Technology is is the making, modification, usage, and knowledge of machines, tools, techniques, crafts and systems. It is a constantly changing definition with a different meaning in almost every dictionary.
