When did the telephone get popular?

They were invented in 1876 (before electric lights even!) and were quickly seen as interesting. Advances in technology resulting in longer distances calls being possible, coupled with the invention and spread of customer dialing equipment (rather than having to use operators for every call), greatly increased the telephone's usefulness and spread of technology in the early 20th century.

The idea of cell phones actually began in the 1920's with police radios. In 1943 Bell Labs made the first cell protype. Cooper made his phone in 1973, but it was only in use by government offices/officals until 1983. The first cell phones were large, looked like house phones, and the battery was set in the bottom of a bag. They were heavy and didn't work in many places at first. ( I had one).

The first dropped call occured in Japan in 1979 on the NTT 1G system. Keep in mind, that in it's infancy, dropped calls were a relatively common (more so than now) problem for mobile phone users. In 1986, when I started in the cellular industry, less than 10 of the US had cell phone coverage. You could drop a call driving from your house to down the block simply because you happened to live at the outside edge of the local cell tower's coverage range. There might in fact be coverage gaps of 10-500 miles between towers.
