The Soviet lunar program began before the Americans got their first rockets off the ground and ended four year after the last Apollo lunar mission. The Soviets suffered several failures in their missions, however, they did reach the moon (although only in unmanned vehicles), established several firsts, and returned with lunar samples.

Below is a list of Soviet lunar missions. Included are the launch dates, the development name of the crafts, official names of the craft where applicable, the mission goal(s), and the results of the mission: (bolded missions were considered successful)

a Robot! No manned Soviet craft have landed on the Moon, at least officially. There was one in the movie Apollo l8, but that"s Science Fiction, and very downbeat Science fiction at that. They could have made some concessions to at least allow one member of the A-l8 crew to survive ( such as the orbital observer , who did not actually land on the Moon, and he had the Command module.)
