It does not help that there is political opposition to the construction of high level waste storage facilities, and it does not help that there are anti-nuclear folks out there that will stop at nothing, including lying and spreading disinformation, to oppose the plants.
Unfortunately, alternative sources of energy are not ready, nor will they be ready in the near term, to take on the growing energy demand of the world. According to the nuclear regulatory commission (NRC) there are at least 11 nuclear powered electrical generating plants. There are 4 facilities which have been shut down and are being decommissioned.

I can only find one site, Columbia Nuclear Station, 12miles NW of Richland. This is a GE Type5 reactor, rated output 1107 MWe. There was a research reactor at university in Seattle but this is being decommissioned. There are no nuclear plants in Washington DC
