Iron is a metal having 2 electrons in outer orbit. They move freely across the entire piece of metal, like a 'gas' of electrons moving in metal. If we add carbon to it, witch has 4 electrons in it's outer orbit, witch does not want to give 4 electrons as then it will become highly electropositive and if takes 4 electrons, then it will become highly electronegative to have 8 electrons in outer orbit.. So it will resist flow of electrons across the metal freely, making it HARDER. It will be interesting to see what happens to Iron by addition of silicon or germanium, witch also have 4 electrons in outer orbit.

What element makes steel when carbon is added?

Iron. When carbon is added to iron in controlled amounts, it forms steel, a strong and versatile alloy.

Is steel metal?

Yes, steel is a metal. Carbon steel, is composed of iron and carbon, with other additives added depending on the type of steel that is needed.

What element is formed when a little bit of carbon is added to it?

No elements if formed when carbon is added. When carbon , or any other element/metal is added , it is a mixture , known as an ALLOY. For various steels, the initial element is IRON, when carbon is added to form an alloy known as STEEL.

Carbon and iron together make steel so the answer yo uare looking for is iron - Fe

ASTM A 487 is it carbon steel?

A 487 is a high strength low alloy steel. there is nothing such as a carbon steel .iron becomes steel only when carbon is added to it.steel itself is an alloy of iron and carbon.hence the term carbon steel is wrong it is just steel.

What is the difference between mild iron and mild steel?

Iron is the pure element, mild steel, or any steel is iron with a little bit of carbon added. The iron becomes mild steel, steel or any other type of steel depending on how much carbon is added to the iron.

What is added to iron to make steel and give different proportions?

The main ingredient is carbon. Carbon is what makes iron into steel. Other chemicals are added, like chromium, which makes stainless steel. Different amounts of carbon can change the properties. Adding a lot of carbon makes high-carbon steel, which is hard and flexible, used to make knife blades and (lower quality) springs. Adding molybdenum (and chrome, I think) makes chromoly steel, very flexible and strong steel often used in the racing industry. The element chromium, itself another metal, is added to steel (which is iron with a bit of carbon) to make stainless steel alloys. Also added: vanadium, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, wolfram, etc.Chromium and nickel are added to the iron to make stainless steel.it will be process in heating room
