Spelling is a recognition of the proper letter sequence to indicate a known word. Some words can have more than one spelling, and some spellings can have more than one meaning. You may also recognize misspellings that are close enough to the correct spelling, as well as abbreviations that represent words.

(Text abbreviations such as u, ur, and 2 are easily recognized as you, your, and to/too.)

You are trained in Spelling and English classes to use the proper spellings, so that your writing can be more easily understood, i.e. clear in meaning. The only way to build recognition of spelling is by reading and writing. Using a spell checker is not a perfect answer, but it can help eliminate misspellings that otherwise become a habit.
