The astronomers who were searching for new planets were big fans of the TV show "Xena, Warrior Princess", so they decided that they would use the name "Xena" for the first planet they discovered that was bigger than Pluto.

So when they did discover something new and planet-like, they assigned it the name "Xena" when they reported the discovery to the International Astronomical Union, the organization that tracks and classifies such things.

This caused a lot of controversy, because with newer telescopes and faster computers, astronomers around the world had discovered literally DOZENS of objects in space that were all nominated to be the "Tenth Planet". At their next convention, the IAU finally proposed a standard definition of "Planet", and added several new proposed classifications including "dwarf planet" and "trans-Neptunian object". The convention attendees, all professional astronomers, approved the new definitions.

Unfortunately, none of the new objects, including Xena, Sedna or even Pluto, were classified as "planets". Xena was classified as a Dwarf Planet along with Pluto and the asteroid Ceres, and was officially named "Eris".
