When you are explaining a concept, you often use examples to make your explanation clearer. Sarin, nerve gas and mustard gas would be examples of Chemical Warfare Agents. Sometimes, you can improve your explanation by giving examples that are notChemical Warfare Agents, eg, Oxygen. These non-examples still have to have some characteristics of the original example, but not the significant characteristic that makes the original what it is. Some educators are now calling these "non-examples."

A maths teacher explaining equations might write:

  • 3a + 2b = 7. This is an equation.
  • 12 - 8. This is not an equation.
  • 14b - 3 = 25. This is an equation.
  • 150>125. This is not an equation.

Students have the potential to learn as much from the non-examples as from the examples.
